Photography is one field protected by the Law which governs the matter of Copyright in Indonesia; that is Law no. 19 year 2002 (regulated in article 12). Copyright means the right to copy. This is a legal construct, dedicated to artist, which in this case is photographers, in order to protect their artworks. This right appears as soon as a photo is created. It gives exclusive right to the photographer exploit all benefits out of the photo like selling copies of them, create any derivative artworks and giving permission for other parties to use the photo under terms and condition (license) set by the creator (including to set the compensation money for their effort of creating the photo). Copyright issue seems to be a forgotten aspect for Balinese artist. So for you Bali professional photographer, better you concern about this matter. Copyright uses the system of “first to use” not first to file”. So if you’re for example a Bali wedding photographer and want you’re artworks protected, you don’t need to do things like putting the symbol © on your photos or posting your photos onto your website right after being captured, because the date of modification of every files on your computer are surely recorded and this date is the real proof of the originality of your photos.
